Renting a Car in Melbourne as a Young or International Driver
If you are under 25, or you hold an overseas licence, hiring a car in Melbourne can feel like the industry would rather you caught the tram. Surcharges, credit card bonds, counters that turn you away. It does not have to work like that. We are District Rentals, a Turo host in Deanside in Melbourne’s west, and a good share of our 436 trips have been exactly these drivers. Here is what you actually need.
What you need to book through Turo
- A valid driver’s licence
- A Turo account, which verifies your identity and licence when you sign up
- A payment card for the booking
That is the list. Verification happens once, in the app, before your first trip. There is no counter interrogation at pickup because there is no counter.
How age works on Turo
Traditional companies charge a young driver surcharge under 25, and some will not rent to you at all under 21. You often only find out the real cost at the desk. Turo handles age on the platform instead. When you search, you only see cars you are eligible to book, and if a young driver fee applies it is built into the total price shown before you confirm. The number at checkout is the number. No surprise line item after you have already flown in.
International licences
Victoria lets visitors drive on a valid overseas licence. If your licence is not in English, carry an English translation or an International Driving Permit alongside it. Turo checks your licence when you create your account, so sort that before you travel and pickup day is easy. Bring the physical licence with you when you collect the car. A photo on your phone does not count.
No counter deposit
This is the one that stings young and international drivers hardest at traditional counters. A bond frozen on a credit card, often a credit card only, no debit accepted. For a visitor without an Australian credit card that can end the booking on the spot. Turo does not work that way. Payment runs through the app when you book. Nobody at a desk puts a hold on your card before handing over the keys.
Insurance is already sorted
Every trip booked through Turo is insured through Turo. You choose a protection plan at checkout and the cost is shown upfront. There is no separate policy to arrange and no counter upsell aimed at a nervous first time renter. For a young driver especially, knowing the full insured cost before you commit takes most of the stress out of it.
Picking up the car
Our cars live in Deanside, postcode 3336, in Melbourne’s west, and local pickup there is free. We can deliver across Melbourne on request. Melbourne Airport is pickup by request only, so if you are flying in, message us before you book and we will give you a straight answer for your dates. Phone or WhatsApp 0414 829 388. A real person replies, which is handy when you are new to the city, new to renting, or both.
A few tips before you drive off
- Take photos of the car at pickup and drop off, all four corners and the fuel gauge
- We drive on the left in Australia, and Melbourne’s CBD has hook turns at some intersections, so read up on those before you tackle the city
- Message your host with anything you are unsure about, that is what we are here for
We hold 5.0 stars from 370 reviews, and plenty of those came from first time renters and visitors who expected the process to be harder than it was. Cars start from $40 a day.
A valid licence and a verified Turo account is genuinely all it takes. No counter, no credit card bond, insurance through Turo sorted at checkout.
